The path of love will take you through 10 Brežice attractions that are in some way connected with love and have not yet been discovered by mass tourism. You will discover a love story that lasts longer than lust, actively relive it and feel differently while reliving it.
The route starts at the Iron bridge, after which you will head towards the Brežice Hydroelectric power plant, where you can try to solve the puzzle at the "photo point". The answer to the riddle will take you to Brežice Castle - the Posavje Museum Brežice, which, in addition to its defensive duties, has written many a love story. The castle houses a protocol wedding room, where many couples commit their love story. You can also marry in the beautiful Knights' Hall, the castle courtyard and the castle wine cellar. Just a steps away from the castle is the Love bench, which faces Gasa street, today's Stara pravda`s street, where beautiful photographs of lovers are taken. Just a few steps away are the Castle stables, where the music school today nurtures children's love of music, and the Castle Granaries, which are among the most beautifully preserved granaries in Europe. Continue straight on until you reach the yellow house with iron shutters. You will notice the initials "LDC" and the year 1790. You will reach the Del Cott family house, one of the oldest houses in Brežice. Under the Del Cott house there was also a convenient Sava harbour. The family love story is about 11-year-old Karel, who accidentally damaged the tooth of his 10-year-old neighbour Evgenia Potočnik with a stone while playing on the main street. To his parents' excitement, he spontaneously responded that she would be his wife in any case, which is exactly what happened in 1877. The path leads us to two buildings standing opposite each other, which in the past represented the division of Brežič inhabitants into German and Slovene townspeople. The National Home (on the left) represented the slowenian townsman and their love for the Slovene nation, while the German Home (on the right) represented the German people and their love for the German way of life. On the way to the Water Tower, there is another stop at the Church of St. Lawrence, where you will be introduced to the love of the Christian faith. The trail ends at the 46 m high Water Tower, which was renovated in 2022. It has been in our town since 1914 and until 1983 it allowed the water pumped from the well in Brezina to be permanently available in the very centre of the town. Legend has it that a nobleman or businessman fell in love with a local girl when visiting Brežice and, as a token of his love, agreed with the architect of the time to design hearts around the windows of the Water Tower. This beautifully designed monument of technical heritage offers an interactive experience about water, its supply and its importance. The hearts add further meaning to all these values and to the pricelessness of good and accessible water.
You will discover that love is hidden in all forms and many corners of Brežice. Brežice has many love stories to tell, but above all, it is a small town with a big heart, where the building facades of the town centre tell the stories of the interesting history, culture, architecture and life of the people of Brežice.
