World Wetlands Day: Protecting Our Natural Treasures

Svetovni dan mokrišč: Varovanje naših naravnih zakladov

Every year, on World Wetlands Day, we remember how crucial these unique ecosystems are for our planet.

Wetlands are not only a source of clean water and natural beauty, but also spaces where biodiversity is maintained, floods are regulated, and carbon is stored – all of which significantly influence climate regulation. As we mark this day on February 2nd, it is time once again to emphasize the importance of protecting these precious habitats.

Jovsi – A Jewel Among the Kapelska Hills

One example that illustrates the value of wetlands is Jovsi. Covering 460 hectares, this area of waterlogged meadows stretches along the Sota River among the Kapelska Hills. Thanks to its exceptional natural conditions and traditional extensive agricultural practices, Jovsi have become home to numerous rare and endangered plant and animal species. For this reason, they are protected as a natural monument and are included in the Nature 2000 network, underscoring their global significance.

Visitors to the area can enjoy the restored observation tower, designed for nature enthusiasts and offering a breathtaking view of this unique landscape. In addition, an information center has been established in the heart of Kapel—a town located between Brežice and Bizeljsko—where educational materials, such as a nature documentary, informational panels, and animations, are available. This space provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the characteristics and importance of wetlands.

Why Protect Wetlands?

Wetlands like Jovsi serve as a vivid example of how nature and humanity can coexist in harmony. These ecosystems provide vital habitats for numerous species that would not survive without them. Moreover, they contribute to climate stability and reinforce natural processes that are essential for maintaining a healthy environment. Protecting wetlands also means preserving a cultural and natural heritage that can be cherished by generations to come.

Together for the Future

World Wetlands Day reminds us that every step we take to safeguard nature is important. By visiting and learning about areas such as Jovsi, we raise awareness and encourage further efforts to preserve these unique habitats. Let this day inspire us all to continue acting responsibly—only together can we ensure that wetlands and their invaluable species continue to flourish in a healthy environment.

Let’s protect nature and secure the future of our planet!
