Water is the source of life — let’s protect it!

On Saturday, March 22, we mark World Water Day, which reminds us of the priceless value of water and its importance for life on Earth. Water is a fundamental resource, essential for survival. Not only is it crucial for human life, but it also plays an important role in ecosystems, agriculture, and industry.

Is water really that important for humans?

The human body is made up of approximately 60% water, meaning it plays a key role in the functioning of all bodily processes. Water enables the transport of nutrients and oxygen throughout the body, regulates body temperature, aids digestion, and helps remove waste. It is recommended to drink at least two liters of water daily to ensure optimal hydration, well-being, and health.

In Brežice, you can safely drink tap water!

We are fortunate in Brežice to have excellent-quality water that is safe to drink. Everyone can fill their bottle for free at three public water fountains located near the Water Tower, the castle, and the municipal building. We also recommend using a reusable bottle to significantly reduce the intake of microplastics into our bodies.

Interesting facts about water:

  • Although 71% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, only about 2.5% of it is freshwater.
  • As much as 97% of all water on Earth is salty and not suitable for drinking.
  • The average person uses approximately 150 liters of water per day at home.
  • The production of one pair of jeans requires around 7,500 liters of water.

How can we save water?

Although Slovenia is lucky to have access to quality drinking water, we must remember that this resource is not unlimited. Here are some simple tips for saving water:

  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
  • Run the washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full.
  • Use water-saving taps and showerheads.
  • Water your garden early in the morning or in the evening to reduce evaporation.
  • Reuse rainwater for watering plants or flushing toilets.

Each of these actions is simple to implement, yet together they can significantly reduce water consumption and contribute to better resource management.

The impact of climate change on water resources

Climate change is already significantly affecting the quantity and quality of water. Higher temperatures cause increased evaporation and droughts, reducing the availability of freshwater. On the other hand, increasingly frequent and intense downpours lead to floods and water pollution. Changes in rainfall patterns mean that areas once rich in water may face shortages, while others may experience excessive amounts of water in a short period. This makes it even more important to use water wisely, conserve it, and protect it from pollution.

Together for the preservation of water

Water is a vital resource, but it is not taken for granted everywhere. Millions of people around the world do not have access to clean drinking water. Therefore, it is even more important that we value and protect it. Let World Water Day be an opportunity to recognize its importance and contribute to its preservation – for us, for future generations, and for our planet.
