We often hear that sustainable development is the only path to a successful future. This is especially true for transport, which is one of the main sources of air pollution and climate change. The pursuit of a sustainable society and mobility is also the fundamental goal of the EU’s Sustainable Mobility Regulation, which aims for a low-carbon society. We in the Municipality of Brežice are well aware of this. Lately, we have been making persistent efforts to increase sustainable mobility and improve transport connectivity between local towns.
A 4.6 km Cycling Route
To this end, the Municipality of Brežice has embarked on extensive projects to establish new cycling connections and improve the road infrastructure. The municipality successfully obtained funding from the European Regional Development Fund for the operation.
“This operation is being carried out under the Operational Programme for the Implementation of the EU Cohesion Policy in the 2014–2020 period.”
In October, a modern 4.6 km cycling connection between Brežice and Dobova along the R2-420 state road was opened, providing a quick and, above all, safe cycling link between the two towns. The project was co-financed by EU funds, and the total value amounts to EUR 2.9 million. Through this project, the Municipality of Brežice has ensured quality infrastructure conditions and will continue to promote the use of bicycles for daily commuting.
Slovenia Green Destination Platinum
In the long term, Brežice aims to establish sustainable mobility, improve conditions for safe cycling, and thereby reduce the number of vehicles on the road. Investing in sustainable mobility is also one of the guiding principles of municipal tourism, evidenced by the fact that the Čatež & Brežice destination holds the Green Destination Platinum label. As a green destination, together with all tourism stakeholders, we strive to create an environmentally and socially responsible destination, whose offerings are based on sustainable products.
A Major Contribution to Safe Cycling and a Healthy Lifestyle
The newly established cycling routes are intended for both local residents and tourists, primarily promoting sustainable travel. The cycling path is located away from congested traffic areas, helping to reduce traffic loads and offering an excellent way to explore the surroundings and local landmarks by bike. In addition to cycling, it connects to other forms of sustainable travel at the destination, such as walking—since there are many nearby walking trails—and it supports local businesses and the preservation of the local environment.
Nowadays, cyclists can head from Brežice to Dobova to visit the youngest spa resort, Terme Paradiso, stopping for refreshments in Mostec at local establishments. One of these is Gostilna Krulc, the oldest restaurant in the Posavje region, as well as Gostilna Cetin, which holds the Green Key environmental certificate. From there, you can also cross the Sava River via its only operating ferry—a further example of sustainable transport in the destination—which connects Mostec with Slovenia’s largest thermal resort, Terme Čatež.
By building and connecting cycling routes, the tourist destination becomes more welcoming to visitors, enabling both individuals and families to safely discover new points of interest.
