While the number of people facing hunger is increasing, enormous amounts of edible food are wasted every year.
On Sunday, September 29, we observe the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, a reminder of one of the biggest hidden challenges of our time – food waste. While many people around the world face hunger, enormous amounts of perfectly edible food end up in the trash. In the EU alone, nearly 59 million tons of food are wasted each year, which equals 131 kg per person. In Slovenia, each individual throws away an average of 72 kg of food annually.
Even though the amount of food wasted at home or while traveling may seem small, its environmental impact is significant. Every wasted meal represents wasted water, energy, transport, labor, and natural resources. Food that isn’t eaten has already traveled the full journey from farm to fork – and when we waste it, we also waste everything that went into producing it.
Why does this matter during travel?
As a visitor to Brežice, you have a unique opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable world through your actions. Tourism often means more packaging, more food leftovers, and less thoughtful shopping. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Here are a few simple tips to help you reduce food waste as a tourist:
Plan your meals – If you’re cooking for yourself, buy only what you need. Shop at local markets for fresh, locally grown food – it’s not only tastier but also supports the local community.
Use leftovers – Yesterday’s lunch can become today’s quick meal on the go.
Store food properly – If you're staying in an apartment or campsite, check the fridge and use sealed containers to keep your food fresh longer.
Take it with you – If you don’t finish your meal at a restaurant, don’t hesitate to ask for takeaway packaging and enjoy the rest later.
Check expiry dates wisely – “Best before” doesn’t always mean “bad after.” Use your senses – smell, taste, and appearance – to decide.
Every bite counts
If food waste were a country, it would be among the world’s biggest emitters of greenhouse gases. By treating food responsibly, we don’t just reduce waste – we also help fight climate change.
So while enjoying Brežice’s cuisine or exploring local market treats, remember: food is not to be taken for granted. With small steps, we can all make a big difference.
Thank you for being responsible visitors and helping to keep Brežice clean and sustainable!
