Digital Cleanup on Devices

Očistimo se digitalnih odpadkov

Did you know that the digital world also pollutes?

Every saved file, photo, email, or app requires servers and data centers that consume large amounts of electricity and water to operate. Globally, the internet is responsible for nearly 4% of all CO₂ emissions – more than the entire aviation industry!

Why is it important to regularly clean our devices?

➡️ Each deleted file reduces the need for data storage on servers.
➡️ This saves energy, reduces environmental impact, and helps slow climate change.
➡️ Devices run faster, their lifespan increases, and we generate less electronic waste.

Campaign Goals

Remove as much unnecessary data as possible
By the end of the campaign, March 31, 2025, we aim to delete as many gigabytes of unnecessary data as possible and thus ease the burden of digital waste on the environment. With a simple action, each of us can reduce CO₂ emissions and help extend the lifespan of electronic equipment.

Raise awareness
The campaign promotes national awareness of sustainable living, with a special focus on digital responsibility. Digital waste is a frequently overlooked source of environmental impact.

Prevent digital clutter
We aim to empower individuals to adopt simple but effective digital habits – regular deleting, organizing, archiving, and careful saving – to prevent further accumulation of digital waste.

Inspire Slovenians
Each of us can inspire family, friends, colleagues, and the wider community by setting an example and transferring environmentally responsible behavior into the digital world. Together, we can become a digitally responsible society and a model for future generations.

How can you participate?

✔ Clean out your Downloads folder, desktop, and disorganized folders.
✔ Go through your photos and delete duplicates or unusable shots (especially after vacations, we often have too many!).
✔ Clean your inbox, delete old emails, and unsubscribe from unwanted newsletters.
✔ Delete apps you no longer use and regularly archive important files.
✔ Encourage digital cleanup in your company or among coworkers.

Facts that will convince you:

✔ In 2023, data centers and digital infrastructure caused almost as many CO₂ emissions as the entire global aviation industry.

1 GB of cloud data consumes about 5 kWh of energy per year. The tens of thousands of gigabytes that Slovenians unnecessarily store have a significant environmental impact.

✔ If every Slovenian deleted at least 10 GB of unnecessary files, we could save over 21 million kWh of energy – enough to power a city the size of Celje for an entire year!

Let’s make digital responsibility part of our everyday life – for a cleaner, greener future.
