In June 2025, the destination Brežice successfully passed the reassessment within the Slovenia Green Tourism Scheme (ZSST), coordinated by the Slovenian Tourist Board (STO), and once again received the highest sustainability recognition – the Slovenia Green Destination Platinum label.
This confirms its continued commitment to responsible tourism management and development that respects the environment, the local community, and future generations.
What is the Slovenia Green Tourism Scheme
The Slovenia Green Tourism Scheme (ZSST) is a national program that unites destinations and tourism providers under the Slovenia Green brand. It provides tools for measuring and improving sustainable practices and is based on the European Tourism Indicators System (ETIS) and standards of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
The green journey of Brežice – from Silver to Platinum
Brežice joined the Slovenia Green Tourism Scheme in 2018 and was initially awarded the Slovenia Green Silver label. Reassessments take place every three years, and in 2022 the destination already met all criteria for the highest recognition – Slovenia Green Platinum. In 2025, the requirements were even more demanding, yet Brežice once again proudly confirmed its strong sustainability orientation.
Professional assessment and on-site evaluation
The evaluation was carried out in cooperation with an accredited verifier – the GoodPlace Institute for Sustainable Tourism. The process included a thorough review of submitted data on the online platform as well as a field visit. It is precisely through direct contact with the environment, residents, and tourism providers that the credibility, effectiveness, and real-life application of sustainable practices are confirmed.
Together for a destination that respects nature, people, and time
The renewal of the Slovenia Green Destination Platinum label proves that Brežice is not only green on paper, but in everyday practice. One notable example of good practice is the Brežice Town Promenade, the longest-running event in Slovenia, which proudly bears the title Zero Waste Event.
