Monument to the Fallen of World War I, Brežice

AddressBrežice, 8250 Brežice

The monument dedicated to the fallen soldiers of World War I is a stone memorial crafted in the style of late 19th-century classical tombstones. It was erected in 1919 by the residents of Zakot Municipality to honor the soldiers who perished during the First World War. The monument lists the names of the fallen from various villages, topped by a cross with a crucifix. Enclosed by an iron fence, the monument stands by the road from Šentlenart to the center of Brežice, next to the fire station. It serves as a memorial to the war, which lasted from March 26, 1914, to November 3, 1918.

Special credit for the monument's establishment goes to Janez Kreačič (1859–1941), the mayor of Zakot. Born on May 15, 1859, in Trnje as Johann Kreačič, he was the son of a farmer and church warden Janez Kreačič and Katarina Zorko. He passed away in Trnje shortly before the entire village was forcibly relocated by the Germans. Kreačič is mentioned as a municipal advisor (equivalent to a councilor today) in 1906. As the mayor of Zakot, he initiated the erection of this monument near the Brežice railway station in 1919 to commemorate the soldiers of World War I.
