| Address | Ulica bratov Gerjovičev 55, 8257 Dobova |
In Dobova stands the Church of the Name of Mary, built in 1865 in the Neo-Romanesque style, featuring a significant altar designed by Jože Plečnik, and restored after its destruction during World War II.
In Dobova, the first wooden church was built in 1573. In the same year, Ilija Gregorič's army camped by the church. A later church was built in 1659.
The current, strongly Neo-Romanesque Church of the Name of Mary was built in 1865. Originally, it was a branch of the Videm parish. An independent vicariate, which was later elevated to a parish, was established in 1765. In the church, there is a large altar, and the statue is said to have been donated to the parish by Blessed A.M. Slomšek. The base, shaped like a boat on which the statue of Mary stands, was designed by the famous architect Mr. Plečnik. The stone pillars are reminiscent of the Greek period, which was without frescoes.
The courtyard around the church is surrounded by a stone wall, and the impressive stone entrance gate also serves as a monument to the locals who fell in World War I. During World War II, the church was destroyed. Following years of restoration, the Franciscans took over the parish, restored the church and rectory, and managed it for 49 years. In 2007, the parish was taken over by the Diocese of Celje. It is also noteworthy that in 1819, the then parish priest Johan Stroj began teaching in the parish in the chaplaincy, in a wooden room with two tables.
