The Church of the Holy Spirit in Mrzlava Vas

AddressMrzlava vas, 8262 Mrzlava vas

The Church of the Holy Spirit in Mrzlava Vas is located southeast of the settlement, oriented towards the southeast. Due to its isolated position in the middle of a wide valley, it serves as a significant visual landmark in the landscape. The church was first mentioned in 1712 in a description of the Parish of Čatež, although its origins likely date back to the second half of the 17th century. The current structure was built or thoroughly renovated in the second half of the 18th century, with a bell tower added on the western side in the 19th century.

The church comprises a rectangular nave, a narrower polygonal chancel, and a bell tower. The exterior is simple, with small window openings. The interior is defined by the chancel, vaulted with a Bohemian cap supported by internal buttresses, while the nave features a flat wooden ceiling. The main altar is of a more recent date but incorporates an older relief of Pentecost from the late 18th or early 19th century. Until 1922, the church housed a late Gothic winged altar, which was transferred to the National Gallery in Ljubljana.

Although it is an average subsidiary church, its location in the valley lends the building a unique spatial significance. Due to its architectural, cultural, and historical features, the Church of the Holy Spirit holds importance as a cultural monument of local significance.
