The Church of St. James on Mali Vrh

AddressMali vrh, 8254 Mali Vrh

The Church of St. James on Mali Vrh is a Roman Catholic subsidiary church of the Parish of Pišece, situated on the highest hill in the village. A historic date inscribed on one of the bells indicates that the church has existed since at least 1689. The church measures 13 meters in length, 5.1 meters in width, and 4.8 meters in height, with the bell tower rising to 18.2 meters. The chancel features a Gothic-style, three-sided termination with a barrel vault dating back to the 17th century. Around 1800, the nave was extended with a semi-chancel termination incorporating the bell tower, similar to the Church of the Holy Cross in Dednja Vas.

The church suffered significant damage when its bell tower collapsed on August 3, 2021. The interior houses three altars: the main altar with an image of St. James and two side altars dedicated to St. Anne and St. John the Baptist. Renovations around 1990 included the addition of a new sacristy, a reinforced concrete ceiling, and a new roof. The bell tower was repainted, a new cross and lightning rods were installed, and two additional bells were purchased.

Further damage occurred due to the Petrinja earthquake on December 29, 2020, which caused the already leaning bell tower to collapse eastward.
