The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary stands in the center of the village of Velika Dolina. It was built between 1882 and 1886 on the site of an older church, the foundations of which are still visible. The church is an example of historicist styles, primarily Romanticism and Gothic, as evident from its floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross, the short presbytery, the position of the bell tower, and the vaulted system.

The building is almost entirely constructed from local sandstone and has been preserved in its original form. The builders were mason Filip Jakob Zupančič and entrepreneur Jožef Tomek from Ljubljana. Plans for the church were made as early as 1879, but the author of the design is not definitively known.

The interior of the church is adorned with altars from Tyrolean woodcarving workshops, which have been preserved in their original form and appearance. The church is a rare example of a new construction from the period of historicist styles in the Brežice municipality, alongside the church in Dobova and the adapted parish church in Čatež ob Savi.
