The church was built in 1798 on the site of an older predecessor in a late Baroque style with elements of Classicism. Initially, the main altar housed a statue of the Virgin Mary with Jesus in her arms, known as "Mary on the Lake." Because the valley between the chapel hill and the Sotla River was still covered by water at the time, the original name of the parish was "Chapel on the Lake." A major renovation of the church took place in 1884, when a new bell tower was added and the church was furnished with new organs. A destructive earthquake in 1895 damaged the church so severely that it was no longer safe for worship, and services had to be held in the nearby Church of the Holy Trinity. The church was restored again, and the renovation was completed by 1906. On May 1, 1907, the restored church was consecrated by Bishop Dr. Mihael Napotnik.

The interior of the church is divided by two blind domes and a smaller, flat-ended chancel. The vaults are entirely painted with frescoes, the central image depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The wall paintings can be definitely dated to the post-earthquake restoration and are attributed to the artistic tradition of Tomaz Fantoni and Jakob Brolla. From this time also comes the altar relief of the Assumption of the Virgin, accompanied by statues, created by the workshop artisans from South Tyrol.
