Church of the Holy Cross, Cirnik
| Address | Cirnik, 8261 Cirnik |
The Church of the Holy Cross in Cirnik is first mentioned in historical sources in 1712, though it likely has older origins, possibly dating back to the medieval period, as evidenced by its proper orientation and patronage. The year 1645, inscribed on the southern portal, likely marks either the year of construction or a major renovation. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the church was equipped with new altars, and later a wooden and plastered bell tower was added, rising above the western wall of the nave. In the early 20th century, a new floor was laid in the chancel.
The church consists of a rectangular nave with a ceiling, a three-sided chancel, and a small bell tower above the western wall of the nave. The exterior of the church is notable for its window frames and portals, carved from local sandstone. The southern portal is particularly ornate, with a relief at the top depicting an angel’s head and wings, along with the year 1645. Inside, the chancel dominates with a ribbed star vault, supported by columns. The main altar dates from the second half of the 17th century, while the side altars are likely from the 18th century.
This church represents a 17th-century subsidiary church that has retained its authentic form and bears witness to the rich history of the area.
