Church of St. Peter, Stankovo
The village is first mentioned in 1295, while the church, as a parish church of Čatež, is first mentioned by Valvasor in the 17th century. This suggests that the present Church of St. Peter was built around this time, more precisely before 1639, when the side altar was dated. The three-sided chancel with a ribbed vault, resting on simple geometric corbels, also aligns with this timeframe. Originally, the church did not have a bell tower but a bell cove in the Mediterranean style, while the round window on the western façade, still preserved in the attic, divided the western part. In the 19th century or later (the bell dates to 1924), the bell cove was removed, and the present bell tower was built.
The church today consists of a rectangular nave with a flat ceiling, a single-nave chancel with a three-quarter closure and ribbed vaulting, and a bell tower on the western side. The three altars from the 17th century, known as the "golden altars," are significant, with the right side altar, restored in 1849, being particularly interesting due to its origin date of 1639.
The building represents a typical parish church but stands out due to its largely preserved 17th-century appearance, which is also reflected in the interior furnishings. The main altar, with its rich artistic details, is especially noteworthy and gives the church a distinctive character.
