Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, Bušeča vas
| Address | Bušeča vas, 8263 Bušeča vas |
The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Bušeča vas is the oldest church in the parish and the only one belonging to the Brežice municipality. On the southern side, a Romanesque-style window is preserved. The interior of the church is adorned with frescoes from the 15th and 17th centuries.
The monument's significance as an architectural object, built in the Middle Ages and whose present form is the result of numerous renovations in Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles, is especially evident in its Gothic phase. The church is one of the easternmost and the only preserved example of Gothic architecture in this area.
Even more important is its Gothic fresco decoration, as it is one of the finest examples of Slovenian wall painting, stylistically connected to the central Slovenian and Carinthian painting production. The frescoes in the church are attributed to the Master of Srednja vas from Šenčur, trained in Carinthia, who introduced elements of the so-called International Gothic style to Slovenian lands in the mid-15th century.
