Istenič Winery

After graduating in oenology, Janez Istenič successfully embarked on a career as a winemaker in one of the Yugoslav state-owned wine cellars. His enthusiasm for bubbles peaked during a study visit to France, where he became acquainted with the tradition of champagne making. Upon returning home, he recognized the similarity between the vineyards of his father-in-law and those in Champagne. With some savings, he paved his way as the first Slovenian private producer of sparkling wine. In 1968, his first wine and daughter were born, both named with the beautiful name Barbara.

They offer tours and tastings, their sparkling wines Barbara and No. 1 are included in the collective brand Brežice Selection and can be purchased in our online store.
