The original building of the Brežice Castle was built by the Salzburgers in the 12th century for administrative and defence purposes. In the 16th century the castle was burnt down or ruined – most of the damage occured in 1515 during the largest Slovenian Peasants’ revolt. In 1529, the construction of a new Renaissance fortress began. The building was finished in 1601 when it was in Franc Gall von Gallenstein’s possesion. During the 17th century, the castle was mostly owned by the Frankopan family, while in the 18th century the Attems family changed the building into a residential castle with the so-called Knight’s Hall with Baroque frescoes, a staircase and a chapel. Since 1949, the Castle has belonged to the museum Posavje Museum of Brežice. The Brežice Castle is a place for weddings in one of the most beautiful Baroque halls in this part of Europe, concerts, different cultural events, festivities, workshops …
The mighty building of Brežice castle stands at the end of the south part of the main street and holds the title of the cultural heritage of national importance.
The original castle was probably constructed by Salzburgians in the 12`th century for administrative and defense purposes. The castle was burned and destroyed multiple times during the 16`th century, completely in 1515 during the first farmer`s rebellion.
In 1529 the construction of the new renaissance forts begin and was constructed in 1601, during the ownership of Franc Gall Gallenstein. Most of the 17`th century was owned by Frankopan`s, in the 18`th century was transformed into a mansion with a baroque painted Knight's Hall, staircase, and chapel by the Attems family.
Since 1949 is the home of Posavje`s museum (The Museum of Posavje). Castle is hosting weddings in one of the most beautiful baroque halls, concerts, cultural events, ceremonies, and workshops.
