The Municipality of Brežice Among Slovenia’s Most Successful Tourist Destinations in the First Half of 2026

In the first six months of 2026, the Municipality of Brežice ranked sixth in Slovenia in terms of overnight stays, with guests from neighbouring countries accounting for the largest share.

Only Ljubljana, Piran, Bled, Kranjska Gora and Bohinj rank ahead of Brežice, making Brežice the leading destination in Slovenia’s Eastern Cohesion Region and the leading tourist municipality in Thermal Pannonian Slovenia.

During this period, more than 300,000 overnight stays were recorded, representing a 7% increase compared to the same period in 2025. A total of 109,074 tourist arrivals were recorded, an increase of 8.6% compared to last year.

Foreign tourists accounted for more than half of all arrivals (60.5%), while domestic visitors represented 39.5%. Foreign guests also accounted for the majority of overnight stays (56%), which is two percentage points more than in the same period last year.

Among international visitors, guests from Croatia generated the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 15.6% of the total, or almost 47,000 overnight stays. This represents a 20% increase compared to the previous year. Croatia was followed by Italy, Austria, Serbia and Germany. Together, the top five international markets generated 40% of all overnight stays, with each market exceeding 12,000 overnight stays.

The average length of stay was 2.8 days, exceeding the Slovenian average, which currently stands at 2.5 days.

Hotels accounted for the largest share of overnight stays (46%), followed by campsites (44%), apartments and private rooms (7%), while other types of accommodation, including hostels, guesthouses and tourist farms, accounted for 3%. The largest accommodation provider, Terme Čatež, generated 91% of all overnight stays, followed by Terme Paradiso, Hostel MC Brežice and Pension Les.

The digital castle room, The Magnificent Seven Castles of Posavje, located in the modern Tourist Information Centre Čatež ob Savi within the Terme Čatež complex, which was renovated last year, welcomed 1,983 visitors by the end of June. International visitors accounted for 63% of those seeking tourist information, two percentage points more than in the same period last year. Part of the Tourist Information Centre is also dedicated to the sale of products carrying the Brežice Izbrano (Brežice Selected) collective brand.

Summer Continues in the Park

The end of the Mestna promenada (City Promenade), which attracted more than 20,000 visitors, does not mark the end of summer events in Brežice. Poletje v parku (Summer in the Park) begins tonight, offering concerts, a stand-up comedy evening and relaxed gatherings under the trees in the pleasant setting of the park by the Brežice Youth Centre.

More information about the programme is available on the Visit Brežice destination website.

Brežice – A Town of Festivals

From 21 to 23 August, Brežice will host the 10th International Children’s Singing Festival. This year’s milestone edition brings together an impressive international line-up. A total of 67 young performers, aged between 5 and 17, from seven different countries will take to the stage. The festival continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the region’s important platforms for emerging young talent. This year’s promotional posters proudly feature Ameli Dinarina-Šimić, last year’s winner.

At the end of August, Brežice will once again celebrate the art of film. From 26 to 29 August, the 3rd Brežice European Film Festival will take place, presenting 15 carefully selected European films, including several Slovenian festival premieres. The festival continues to strengthen Brežice’s position as an important cultural and film destination, with festival passes already available at the Posavje Museum Brežice.

Family Day

The summer season in the destination will conclude on 4 September with Family Day, bringing a varied programme for children and parents to the park by the Brežice Youth Centre, together with a market featuring unique products by local creators.

This summer will therefore once again offer visitors numerous opportunities to spend time together, explore the destination and create new experiences.
