ArrayAfter nearly two decades of restoration, Pišece Castle is once again open to the public. The official opening took place on Saturday, 12 September 2026, attracting numerous visitors who had the opportunity to explore the castle on guided tours.
The guests were addressed by the Mayor of the Municipality of Brežice, Ivan Molan, the Director of the Posavje Museum Brežice, Alenka Černelič Krošelj, and the Minister of Culture, Dr Ignacija Fridl Jarc. The cultural programme featured the Pišece Wind Orchestra, the Kapele Wind Orchestra and the Loče pri Dobovi Fire Brigade Wind Orchestra, which joined forces for this special occasion. The ceremony concluded with the official ribbon-cutting in front of the castle entrance.
Pišece Castle was declared a cultural monument of national importance in 1999, and its comprehensive restoration began in 2005. Local residents and members of the Society for the Preservation of the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Pišece Castle played an important role in preserving the castle and maintaining its surroundings, even while it was closed to the public.
In 2026, a management agreement was signed between the Ministry of Culture, the Posavje Museum Brežice and the Municipality of Brežice. The castle will be transferred into management in phases, while new cultural, educational, tourism and other programmes will be developed. Local societies, institutions and residents of Pišece will continue to play an important part in bringing the castle back to life.
Visitors can discover the stories of the Knights of Pišece and the Moscon family and explore four exhibition displays. These include a presentation of the castle’s earliest period, stories about its former residents and a digital presentation of Pišece Castle’s connections with other castles. Larger halls and other spaces are also available for events and gatherings, enabling the local community to remain actively involved in the life of the castle.
At the opening ceremony, Peter Skrivalnik, Ivan Radanovič and Uroš Škof received special recognition for their long-standing contribution to the preservation of the castle and were awarded the honorary title of Knight of Pišece.
The reopening of Pišece Castle is an important addition to the cultural and tourism offer of the Brežice destination. A visit to the castle can be combined with a walk through its English-style landscape park, featuring a pond, landscaped paths and the tallest giant sequoia in Slovenia, as well as with exploring other attractions in Pišece and the surrounding area.
Visitor information
Pišece Castle is open from Thursday to Sunday, between 10:00 and 16:00. Visits are also possible on other days and at other times by prior arrangement. Visitors can choose an individual ticket for the castle or a combined ticket that also includes admission to the Posavje Museum Brežice and/or the Water Tower. Tickets are available at the castle.
