The courtyard of the Posavje Museum Brežice Castle came alive once again on Friday, 19 June 2026, celebrating local flavours, tradition, and pleasant social gathering.
Bread, Wine and Salami Day once again showcased the rich and vibrant culinary tradition of Brežice. Visitors had the opportunity to stroll among the stands of winegrowers’ and tourism associations, taste wines from all six winegrowers’ associations of the Brežice destination, and enjoy homemade salamis, cheeses, cured meat products and other local delicacies prepared by tourism associations, the Hunting Cuisine Association Gadova peč, the Brežice Association of Rural Women, and local producers.
Award-winning homemade breads
One of the central parts of the event was the homemade bread competition, which attracts great attention every year. The expert committee evaluated the breads in five categories, taking into account their appearance and shape, crust and crumb characteristics, aroma, and taste.
In the wheat bread category, Mateja Bajc received first place. Anica Črnelič won the mixed bread category, while Majda Jurše triumphed in the specialty bread category and was also awarded first place in the category of breads made with alternative leavening agents. The award for festive bread was presented to Marija Stergar.
Mayor’s Wine 2026 and Posavje wine champions
The evening was also dedicated to wine. Visitors attended the award ceremony for the winners of the Mayor’s Wine 2026 selection and congratulated the champions of the Posavje Wine Festival Sromlje. This year, the expert panel evaluated Cviček PTP, Beli Bizeljčan PTP, and Yellow Muscat as the selected Mayor’s Wine variety.
Special attention was given to Klet Nujec from the Bizeljsko Winegrowers’ Association, which received the title Mayor’s Wine 2026 for Beli Bizeljčan PTP and Selected Mayor’s Wine 2026 for Yellow Muscat. The title Mayor’s Wine 2026 in the Cviček PTP category was awarded to Roman Kvartuh from the Gadova Peč Winegrowers, Tourism and Cultural Association.
A special atmosphere was also created in the castle wine cellar, where visitors could taste sparkling wines from the Bizeljsko winemakers Hiša pesmi in vina Sagmeister and Winery Mihelin, as well as the highest-rated wines from the Posavje Wine Festival Sromlje. This further emphasized the importance of connecting local gastronomy, winegrowing, tourism, and cross-border cooperation.
The event was enriched by cultural performances as well. The musical atmosphere was provided by the band Gadi, while members of the Kresnice Children’s Folklore Group from Brežice Primary School also performed.
The Bread, Wine and Salami Day is organized annually by the Institute for Entrepreneurship, Tourism and Youth Brežice (ZPTM Brežice) in cooperation with the Municipality of Brežice. The event carries the Brežice Selected quality label and, in 2023, was included among the Top 100 Sustainable Stories in the World.
