If you love fishing or simply adore the peace of nature, Brežice, with its diverse waters, is a true little fishing paradise. The Sava, Krka, and Sotla rivers, gravel pits, ponds, and oxbow lakes offer a different experience at every stop.
Fishing areas
The fishing waters in the Brežice district are managed by Brežice Fishing Family, which looks after 15 fishing districts. Fishing is permitted on the Sava, Krka, Sotla, and Bregana rivers, on the Pirošica stream, at the Vrbina and Boršt gravel pits, the Prilipe, Mokrice, and Opekarna ponds, and on the Cola and Topla struga oxbow lakes.
Every body of water offers its own unique experience. The Vrbina 1 and 2 gravel pits are famous for trophy-sized carp and grass carp, and allow for multi-day, 24-hour fishing. The flowing waters are home to predators – catfish, pike, zander, and asp – including trophy specimens, alongside chub, nase, cactus roach, and barbel. On the Bregana, fishing for brown trout and rainbow trout is permitted by fly fishing. A competition course for float fishing is set up on the Sava, while part of the river in the Sava 21 district is a trophy section where the catch-and-release principle applies.
Permits and points of sale
You need a valid fishing permit to fish. Daily, nightly, and multi-day permits for individual districts are easiest to purchase online at ribiskekarte.si/rd-brezice, where you can also find prices and rules for each body of water. Information about annual permits and membership in the fishing club can be obtained at the headquarters of the Brežice Fishing Family in Prilipe (Prilipe 22a, info@rdbrezice.si), where office hours are held every Wednesday afternoon.
Fishing rules
Before your visit, be sure to check the current fishing rules published on the website ribiska-druzina-brezice.si. The rules determine the permitted fishing methods, protection periods, and daily catch limits for individual fish species, and are occasionally updated according to the fish stocks in the districts. This way, your fishing day will be worry-free, knowing that these waters will remain rich for future generations of anglers
